LIC Housing Finance Scam

Shares of LIC Housing Finance were under pressure after reports surfaced that Central Bureau of Investigation raided the offices of the finance company in connection with an alleged multi-crore home loans scandal.

The scrip plunged 20.34 per cent to Rs 1042.60 on the NSE. It touched a low of Rs 1031.10 in trade so far.

Shares of Central Bank of India were also under pressure on the same issue. However, S Shridar, CMD, Central Bank of India denied any such raids at any of the bank’s branches. He said to ET Now that none of the bank’s officials were contacted by the investigative agency regarding any home loan scam.

The scrip fell 10.30 per cent to Rs 193 on the BSE. It touched a low of Rs 191.40 in trade so far.

Shares of Money Matters Financial Services were also facing selling pressure. The scrip tanked 20.15 per cent to intraday low of Rs 533.80 on the NSE.

Andhra CM K Rosaiah quits

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Wednesday announced his decision to step down from his post citing citing health reasons.

Playing down his resignation, Rosaiah said his resignation was not dictated by political pressures.

“I quit from the post of Chief Minister. It is not politically motivated. I have carried forward the agenda set by the late chief minister YS Rajashekhar Reddy,” said Rosaiah in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Claiming that he did not belong to any group in the Congress, Rosaiah said that he was satisfied with his work.

“I served the party like a soldier. I worked to the satisfaction of the people of Andhra Pradesh. If I have hurt anybody or done anything wrong, it has not been not deliberate,” he said.

Refusing to name his successor, he said that the decision to name his successor would be taken by the Congress High Command. He added that he was not quitting politics.

Union Law Minister and state incharge Veerappa Moily denied any links of Rosiah’s resignation with the Jagan factor.

“He has not resigned for any governance reason but purely personal reason,” said Moily. A three member committee that includes Pranab Mukherjee, Veerappa Moily and Ahmed Patel are expected to reach Hyderabad on Wednesday evening to find a replacement.

Bihar Assembly Election Results

Bihar Polls started from October 21. The dates for next phases were: October 24, October 28, November 1, November 9 and November 20.

89 per cent of the voters were covered in the photo electoral rolls and 82.65 per cent issued Electoral Photo Identity Cards.

The overall voter turnout was 52 per cent with women coming out in larger numbers. While 50.77 percent of the eligible male voters exercised their franchise, it was 54.85 per cent in the case of women.

Counting will be held at 42 counting centres, mostly in the district headquarters towns, where exclusive deployment of central para-military forces has been made, he said.

Counting of votes for all the 243 constituencies to be taken up tomorrow.

Bihar Assembly Election Results will be declared on November 24th 2010.

North and South Korea Exchange Fire, Killing Two

Tensions escalated on the Korean peninsula today as the two Koreas exchange fire for the fourth time in recent years near the western maritime border.

North Korea fired artillery shells toward Yeonpyeong Island, some landing in sea but some landing on the island’s residential area, said Col. Lee Bung-Woo, spokesman at the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The South responded with its own artillery fire.

South Korean media is reporting 60 to 70 houses in the fishing village and sporadic areas in the mountains are on fire engulfed in thick smoke.

Authorities said two South Korean soldiers were killed and 16 others were injured.

At least three civilians have been hurt.

According to the Lee, South Korean naval forces were conducting a routine drill in the waters near the island earlier in the morning.

“North Korea has sent a letter of protest over the drill,” said Kim Hee-jung, spokesperson for the South’s President Lee Myung-bak. “We’re examining a possible link between the protest and the artillery attack.” Reports also say North Korea repeatedly sent warnings to stop the exercises before firing the artilleries.

The South has upgraded the military’s posture to its highest non-wartime alert, the defense ministry said. The Air Force has deployed fighter jets to the island.
